— what's independence day ?
Ang Araw ng Kalayaan, (Independence day) is the day that we as Filipinos got rid of the Spanish rule.

However, even after the first Independence Day, Not so long after, we got colonized by Americans.

Above is Emilio Aguinaldo, the one that raised the flag and proclaimed the Independence of the Philippines after 300+ years of Spanish rule in June 12. He is also known as the First Philippine Republic.

— brief history :
Spanish colonialism began when Miguel López de Legazpi arrived in Cebu. He established the first permanent Spanish settlement in 1565. Spaniards saw the opportunity to conquer & they pursued it. The Spanish king ruled the islands through the viceroy of Mexico. Since then many Filipinos were mistreated, harassed, and suffered under Spanish rule. Because of that, a group called “KKK” was formed.

Short History
The history of the Philippines from 1898 to 1946 describes the period of the American colonization of the Philippines. It began with the outbreak of the Spanish–American War in April 1898, when the Philippines was still a colony of the Spanish East Indies, and concluded when the United States formally recognized the independence of the Republic of the Philippines on July 4, 1946.
With the signing of the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898, Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States, thereby beginning the era of American colonization. The interim U.S. military government of the Philippine Islands experienced a period of great political turbulence, characterized by the Philippine–American War.
Beginning in 1901, the military government was replaced by a civilian government—the Insular Government of the Philippine Islands—with William Howard Taft serving as its first Governor-General. A series of insurgent governments that lacked significant international and diplomatic recognition also existed between 1898 and 1904.
Following the passage of the Philippine Independence Act in 1934, a Philippine presidential election was held in 1935. Manuel L. Quezon was elected and inaugurated second President of the Philippines on November 15, 1935. The Insular Government was dissolved and the Commonwealth of the Philippines, intended to be a transitional government in preparation for the country's full achievement of independence in 1946, was brought into existence.
After the World War II Japanese invasion in 1941 and subsequent occupation of the Philippines, the United States and Philippine Commonwealth military recaptured the Philippines in 1945. The United States formally recognized the independence of the Republic of the Philippines on July 4, 1946, according to the terms of the Philippine Independence Act.

The Proclamation on June 12
Independence was proclaimed on 12 June 1898 between four and five in the afternoon in Cavite at the ancestral home of General Emilio Aguinaldo some 30 kilometres (19 mi) south of Manila. The event saw the unfurling of the Flag of the Philippines, made in Hong Kong by Marcela Agoncillo, Lorenza Agoncillo, and Delfina Herboza, and the performance of the Marcha Filipina Magdalo, as the national anthem, now known as Lupang Hinirang, which was composed by Julián Felipe and played by the San Francisco de Malabon marching band.

KKK, also known as the Kataastaasan Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan” is founded by Filipino patriots Andrés Bonifacio, Teodoro Plata, Ladislao Diwa and others, the Katipunan was a secret organization until it was discovered in 1896. This discovery led to the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution. See more..
